Vaccines work by introducing a harmless piece of a pathogen, like a virus or bacteria, into your body. This piece—called an antigen—triggers your immune system to mount a response. Your body produces specialized cells, such as antibodies and T-cells, to neutralize the antigen. These cells act as a sort of "military force," learning to identify and attack the specific pathogen.

Once the immune system finishes responding, it retains a memory of the antigen through memory cells. These cells remain in your body, ready to spring into action if the actual pathogen is encountered later. This is why vaccines are so effective—they prepare your body to fight diseases before an infection even occurs.

Most vaccines use weakened or inactivated versions of the pathogen, or parts of it, to avoid causing illness. Some, like mRNA vaccines, deliver genetic instructions to your cells to produce a harmless protein fragment, which then sparks an immune response. This process mimics a real infection, teaching your body to recognize threats without the risks of actual disease.

By training your immune system, vaccines create a defense mechanism that can prevent serious illness or reduce its severity. This biological "practice run" ensures your body is prepared to protect you when real pathogens arrive.
