When you consume food, enzymes in your mouth, stomach, and small intestine break it down into simpler molecules like glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids. Once inside cells, glucose becomes the primary energy source. Glycolysis breaks down glucose into pyruvate, while the Krebs cycle and electron transport chain generate most of the ATP.

Your body can also use fats and proteins for energy, though glucose is prioritized. When glucose is scarce, the liver converts stored glycogen into glucose or breaks down fat stores into ketones.
