When you breathe in, air travels through your nose or mouth, down your windpipe, and into the lungs. Inside the lungs, oxygen from the air moves into tiny air sacs called alveoli. Here, oxygen crosses into the bloodstream, where it binds to a protein in red blood cells called hemoglobin. This oxygen-rich blood is then pumped by the heart through arteries to every part of the body.

As blood flows through small vessels called capillaries, oxygen is released and delivered to cells. Within cells, oxygen plays a key role in cellular respiration—a process where glucose and oxygen are used to create energy (ATP) and carbon dioxide. This energy fuels bodily functions, from muscle movement to brain activity.

The journey continues as carbon dioxide, a waste product, is carried back to the lungs via the bloodstream. It’s exhaled through the same pathway oxygen entered, completing the cycle. This constant exchange ensures your cells receive the oxygen they need to function, while waste products are efficiently removed. The entire process happens automatically, sustaining life without conscious effort.
